How many Ballon d'Ors does Leo Messi have?

Lionel ‘Leo’ Messi leads the Ballon d'Or rankings with a total of eight trophies. He won his first in December 2009, beating Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta in the voting. The Argentine forward earned 473 points to claim his first Ballon d'Or.

In 2021, Messi won his seventh Ballon d'Or after beating Robert Lewandowski in the voting. He won his eighth and final Ballon d'Or in 2023, beating Haaland and Mbappé in the vote. His greatest achievement that year was winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with Argentina.

Who votes for the Ballon d'Or?

The Ballon d'Or is an annual award given by French football magazine appropriately titled France Football. Since 2024, it has done so in partnership with UEFA. It is given to the best footballer of the calendar year. Worldwide, it is considered the highest individual recognition in the sport.

It was created in 1956 by the then director of France Football, Gabriel Hanot. The award was initially open only to players with European nationality and who were actively playing in Europe. Since 1995, non-European footballers playing in any European league were also eligible for the Ballon d'Or.

All restrictions were lifted in 2007, allowing any footballer from anywhere in the world to win the award. Regarding the Ballon d'Or voting, a total of 100 journalists from the 100 highest-ranked countries according to FIFA are responsible for voting among the nominated players.

The format for selecting the Ballon d'Or is as follows:

Journalists from the France Football and L'Équipe editorial offices select a total of 30 nominated players whom they consider worthy winners of the trophy. For the women's Ballon d'Or, only 20 players are nominated.
