How to Choose a Fitball

A Swiss ball or fitball is a large ball made of rubber or latex, and although it had a purely therapeutic purpose in the 70s, today its use has spread to all fitness centers . It generates numerous benefits to muscle groups, depending on how we use it, and is suitable for people of all ages and conditions, even for pregnant women, albeit with some restrictions for their use. So you can use it optimally, at we explain how to choose a fitball.

The importance of choosing a fitball

First of all, we should mention that the decision to choose a fitball is very important because if we get a ball that is too big, the exercise will be highly unstable. If, however, the ball is too small, we will have difficulty using the proper posture and it will force our muscles. Under these conditions, the risk of injury increases.

In addition to our height, which we will look at in the next section, when choosing a fitball it is essential that we consider our proportions. The test to determine if the ball is right is to sit on it and see if our legs form a right angle. If they do, we can be sure that this is the right ball for us to do the exercises in the best conditions.

How to Choose a Fitball  - Proportions

In order to choose a fitball, you should note that there is a correlation between height and size of fitball. We'll tell you the correlation, but you should always prioritise the criteria expressed in paragraph 2.

  • Height of person - diameter of fitball
  • 1.50 cm to 1.63 cm (4ft 11in to 5ft 4 in) - 55 cm (21 in)
  • 1.64 cm to 1.79 cm (5ft 4 in to 5ft 10 in) - 65 cm (25 in)
  • Over 1.80 cm (Over 5 ft 10in)- 75 cm (29 in)

A good trick to choose the right fitball size is to sit on it and check that your feet touch the floor completely and comfortably and that your knees are level with your hips, creating a 90 degree angle.

In addition to choosing a fitball that is right for us and our height ratios for different exercises to work correctly, we have to keep the ball in good condition. Therefore, in addition to cleaning it with a damp cloth after each session, we should check its air, so it is not so empty and fail to provide sufficient support for our body.

Nor it is recommended that the ball be too hard, as it would prevent us doing the exercises comfortably.
