How Many Calories Are Burned Running a Marathon
Have you taken up running to lose weight and want to know how many calories you burn while running a marathon? The truth is that there are many things that come into play when calculating calorie expenditure when running or jogging, but there are formulas to help work out an approximate value. That's why, at OneHowTo.com, we want to help answer the question: how many calories are burned running a marathon?
Which factors come in to play?
First of all, you need to bear in mind that there are several important factors when it comes to burning calories with exercise or, as in this case, when jogging or running. So, on one hand, the result will vary based on factors specific to the runner:
- Body composition
And, on the other hand, depending on certain aspects of the run such as:
- Running speed
- Length of the run
How many calories do you burn when running slowly?
There are formulas to help you know exactly how many calories you are burning whilst running, depending on the speed you keep. For joggers or slow-speed runners, apply the following formulas:
- Slow walking (approximately 8 km/h): 0.06 x (weight of the person x 2.2) X total minutes run = approximate calories burned
- Slow jogging (about 13 km/h): 0.104 x (weight of the person x 2.2) X total minutes run = approximate calories burned
So, you must first multiply your body weight by 2.2 and then multiply that by the duration of the run and a variable value according to whether it is a slow jog or a run.
How many calories do you burn when running quickly?
If you run or jog at a faster rate, the formula will vary and the calories burned will increase:
- Fast walking (approximately 11 km/h): 0.092 x (weight of the person x 2.2) X total minutes run = approximate calories burned
- Quick run (about 16 km/h): 0.129 x (weight of the person x 2.2) X total minutes run = approximate calories burned
These formulas are applied as explained in the previous section, with only the first value changing.
Running as a sport
Although you probably already know this, we want to remind you that you should have the right kit to jog or run correctly. Therefore, you should get yourself some good running shoes, as well as appropriate clothing for the climate of your geographical area and/or the season.
